National Teen Self-Esteem Month

National Teen Self-Esteem Month

May 01, 2018

May is Teen Self- Esteem month. What does it exactly mean and why is this month so important?

What is self-esteem? Well self-esteem according to the dictionary is confidence in one’s own worth or abilities; self-respect

This month raises awareness for parents, guardians, teachers, etc. anyone who plays a role in a teens life.  It can be very easy for a teenager to not know their self-worth and be critical of themselves. Low self-esteem can lead to a wide range of health problems. Getting more involved in a teen’s life can stop issues before they even begin.

There are many ways one can help with a teen’s self-esteem like just listening to them, letting them vent with no interruptions, giving them compliments, reassuring them that they are enough!

We have put together a list of things you can do to make that teen in your life feel special!

  • The Three Compliments Journal: Give your teen a journal and have them log in 3 compliments about themselves each morning.
  • Help them find a hobby that they can pursue on their own. This can help them make new friends or even learn new things about themselves.
  • Teach them to always talk positive about themselves. As adults we tend to talk negative about ourselves in front of them, so this can be a great lesson for both adult and teen.
  • Let them toot their own horn! As long as they are doing it respectfully and not hurting anyone else’s feelings, let them brag a little about the things they are great at
  • Let them be themselves!
